Exhibition will spotlight the persecution and human rights violations against the stateless Rohingya community in Burma.

Bangkok, Thailand– A photography exhibition featuring the work of award-winning photojournalist Greg Constantine will open in Bangkok, Thailand on Thursday March 13th.  The exhibition will run from March 13th to March 22nd.

The Rohingya, a Muslim minority from Burma, is considered to be one of the world’s most persecuted people.  In 1982 the Rohingya were stripped of their citizenship by the Burmese government and have since been a stateless people. Decades of exclusion, the denial of basic and fundamental rights and any number of human rights abuses toward the Rohingya have forced hundreds of thousands of Rohingya to flee their homeland to Bangladesh and countries throughout the region.  Violent attacks against the Rohingya community in the Rakhine State of Burma in 2012 destroyed many Rohingya communities and displaced over 100,000 Rohingya in what human rights groups have described as ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.

The exhibition aims to highlight the struggles of the Rohingya community as well as the aftermath of the violence in 2012 and the impact statelessness and the denial of citizenship has had on the community.

Constantine, author of the book “Exiled To Nowhere: Burma’s Rohingya” (2012), has spent the past eight years documenting the plight of the Rohingya as part of his long-term project Nowhere People, which aims to highlight the struggles of stateless communities around the world.   The exhibition in Bangkok is part of a series of international exhibitions of his work on the Rohingya.  Exhibitions have already been held in: London, Canberra, at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, in the European Parliament in Brussels and in Jakarta, Indonesia.

This exhibition is produced in association with the National Endowment for Democracy, Blue Earth Alliance and the Embassy of Canada in Bangkok.
