<p>Myanmar last week played host to the gatherings of the Association for Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as chair of the organization this year. So far, Myanmar has received mixed reviews from the international community on its performance of the chairmanship. Some criticized Myanmar for failing to seriously address the issue of South China Sea. Some congratulated Myanmar for its own political reforms that also saw a rapprochement between Nay Pyi Taw and Washington.</p>

<p>One year since the ASEAN Inter-governmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) was inaugurated in on 23 October 2009, we, the Solidarity for Asian Peoples&rsquo; Advocacy Task Force on ASEAN and Human Rights (SAPA TF-AHR), have prepared a report to review the performance of the AICHR in its first year, as part of our commitment to follow up and push forward the improvement of human rights in ASEAN. Our review encompasses several dimensions: the AICHR&rsquo;s core documents, structure, institution building, implementation, handling of cases, and external relations.</p>
<p>56 organisations/groups have sent a letter to the ASEAN and Heads of Government of ASEAN countries, calling them to pay attention to the struggle of factory workers in Burma.</p>

<p>(Cha-Am, Thailand, 25th October 2009) On the occasion of the&nbsp;inauguration of the ASEAN Inter-Governmental Commission on Human&nbsp;Rights (AICHR), Solidarity for Asian Peoples Advocacy Task Force on&nbsp;ASEAN and Human Rights (SAPA TF-AHR), a coalition of more than 70&nbsp;non-government organisations, reiterates its expectation that the&nbsp;Commission will be accountable, independent and effective in&nbsp;protecting and promoting human rights throughout the region.</p>
