BANGKOK (January 3, 2013)  -- The ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus (AIPMC) today called on Thai authorities to give United Nations refugee agencies unhindered access to Rohingya boat migrants. Thai authorities should suspend plans to deport at least 73 Rohingya migrants back to Myanmar, the regional human rights caucus said.

Disregarding the deep concerns expressed by senior United Nations officials, human rights experts and hundreds of civil society and grassroots organisations at the national, regional and international levels, ASEAN leaders nonetheless adopted  yesterday an “ASEAN Human Rights Declaration” that undermines, rather than affirms, international human rights law and standards. The document is a declaration of government powers disguised as a declaration of human rights.

BANGKOK – The ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus (AIPMC) today welcomed U.S. President Barack Obama’s plans to visit Rangoon next week but urged the President to use his visit to push for key demands and raise human rights concerns with the government there.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia -- 62 grassroots, national, regional, and international civil society groups are calling upon ASEAN Member States to postpone the adoption of the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration, which is not worthy of its name.

In a joint statement released today, over 100 civil society organizations and networks across the ASEAN region have called for the release of the draft ASEAN Human Rights Declaration and the initiation of meaningful public consultations on its content.

Paris-Bangkok, 6 March 2012. The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) will meet in Jakarta this week to continue the drafting of a new human rights instrument, the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration (AHRD). Up to now, this drafting process has been characterized by opacity, absence of broad engagement with civil society, and fears that this declaration may contradict international human rights standards. The eventual text is expected to be adopted by ASEAN leaders at the Summit in November 2012 in Phnom Penh.

Jakarta 05.05.11: The 2011 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Civil Society Conference and ASEAN People’s Forum (ACSC/APF), which took place in Jakarta from 3 – 5 May, brought together 1,330 civil society activists from around the world to discuss the main human rights concerns affecting the region. During the meeting, ARTICLE 19 joined regional civil society representatives in urging ASEAN to enhance its own transparency and provide greater access to information.

The Vice-Chair of the Indonesian National Human Rights Commission, Mr. Nurkholis, today called on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to support a UN investigation into business and human rights violations in Burma. Mr. Nurkholis made his statement as a member of the experts panel at regional civil society’s first Public Hearing on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Human Rights in ASEAN held in Jakarta today.

At the invitation of the Chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Foreign Ministers of ASEAN and their representatives met in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 22 February 2011. The Secretary-General of ASEAN also participated in the meeting.

After six months of massacre happened in Bangkok, Thailand-May 2010. Have we forgotten this massacre and the unanswered justice to the 91 deaths? Those protestors or pro democracy supporters who were forced to confess and being imprisoned. Those who were charged imprison by Lese Majesty law due to their political views?   Have ASEAN activists / communities forgot the vibrant democratic space that we used to enjoy in Bangkok for the last 18 years?

One year since the ASEAN Inter-governmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) was inaugurated in on 23 October 2009, we, the Solidarity for Asian Peoples’ Advocacy Task Force on ASEAN and Human Rights (SAPA TF-AHR), have prepared a report to review the performance of the AICHR in its first year, as part of our commitment to follow up and push forward the improvement of human rights in ASEAN. Our review encompasses several dimensions: the AICHR’s core documents, structure, institution building, implementation, handling of cases, and external relations.
