Black May 1992

17 May 2022 marks the 30th anniversary of “Black May”, a popular uprising in 1992 that ended with a violent military crackdown and the fall of a military-led government. Plans to use the commemoration event to promote reconciliation are drawing more criticism than praise.

Victims, relatives and participants of the Black May 1992 incident attended the 28th commemoration of the mass protests that resulted in the overthrow of a military government. The remains of the dead were temporarily transferred awaiting the anticipated end of construction of their memorial within 90 days, after 7 years of work.

The Thai military ordered the cancellation of public speeches by anti-military figures at an event to commemorate the democratic uprising of May 1992.     According to Sripai Nontri, assistant manager of the Heroes of Democracy Foundation, a group of military officers on Saturday came to the Foundation’s office in Pak Kret District of Nonthaburi Province, north of Bangkok, at around 1 pm and ordered the foundation staff to cut planned speeches by pro-democracy speakers.
