Chulalongkorn University and the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Bangkok celebrated the 30th anniversary of the return of democracy to Czechoslovakia and the 25th anniversary of Czech revolutionary and statesman Václav Havel’s visit to Chulalongkorn University with a concert on Saturday night (23 November) and a panel discussion on Monday (25 November).

Chulalongkorn University has finally amended its uniform regulations to allow students to dress according to their gender identity, after a group of students earlier this year filed a request for this and a complaint against a Faculty of Education lecturer.

Today (29 January 2019), Jirapat, the transgender student who was denied the right to dress according to her gender identity by Chulalongkorn University, went to the Department of Women’s Affairs and Family Development (DWF) to file a formal complaint on her case.

On 15 January 2019, the Board of Administrators at the Faculty of Education at Chulalongkorn University overturned a transgender student permission to wear the university’s uniform for female students, and instead ordered the student to dress as male or face extreme penalties.

Security officers have interrupted a small protest by Chulalongkorn University student activists who called junta chairman Prayuth Chan-o-cha a ‘dictator.’ On 9 April, four students held up a sign reading ‘Chula people love Prayuth dictator’ outside of the Siam Square One shopping mall as the junta chairman exited a talk on technology and innovation that he gave at the university. A traditionally conservative and royally-connected Thai university has exhibited some progress after its Faculty of Arts eased uniform regulations in response to an online campaign.   The Faculty of Arts of the most conservative university in Thailand has decided to stop enforcing the wearing of uniforms.    Last week, a group of anonymous students from Chulalongkorn University (CU) initiated a campaign on Change.org, urging the university to stop forcing students to wear uniforms.
