The Interior Minister’s permission for a Red Bull company to build a reservoir on the site of a community forest has run into protests. On 8 September 2017, the Facebook page Watchdog Act published Interior Ministry documents on a request from KTD Property Development Limited to use over 12 acres of Huai Mek community forest in Khon Kaen Province.

The military on Sunday detained four people, including Prapart Pintobtang, a political scientist from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, who organized a walking rally against the junta’s policy to reclaim protected areas, which has heavily affected the poor. After they started the rally by walking about 50 metres from Suan Dok temple in central Chiang Mai, the military detained the four in a military prison vehicle.

After the coup d’état in May, the junta promised to return happiness to the Thai people. One of the policies that the junta has announced to deliver on this promise is an order to increase Thailand’s forest cover and tighten measures for land resource protection. Although the policy might seem ecologically sensible to many conservationists, the green-grabbing policy of the junta harms many of Thailand’s marginalised communities.
