On 11 February 2016 the Thai army threatened human rights defenders for documenting the military’s continued use of torture on detainees in the country’s south. Major General Banpot Poonpien, the spokesperson for a specialist counterinsurgency agency, the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), accused the human rights groups of fabricating accounts of torture to obtain funding from abroad. He also asked whether or not the groups had the mandate to investigate the work of state officers.

On 11 Feb 16, the spokesperson of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), Maj. Gen. Banpot Poonpien, revealed that regarding the torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment in the Deep South, the security agencies have been well aware of it and have taken precaution to prevent such practice and to avoid any act that would become a problem from a human rights perspective. But even though the environment in the Deep South has changed, some civil society organizations continue to resort to the same old tactic to mobilize their cause without adjusting their roles.

A wrongly identified theft suspect says that police officers threatened to kill him and dump his body on a mountain.   The Cross Cultural  Foundation (CrCF), a human rights advocacy group, reported that on Monday, 8 February 2016, the Provincial Court of Prachinburi in the east of Thailand held a second witness examination hearing in a case filed by Rittirong Chuenjit, 25, against seven police officers.

Allegations of torture committed by the Thai authorities against the Muslim Malay minority in Thailand’s restive Deep South doubled after the 2014 coup, a report says.   The report, released on Friday, showed at least 18 cases of alleged torture and ill-treatment since 22 May 2014, when Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha staged the coup d’état. In 2015 alone, there were 15 recorded cases, whereas a total of 17 were recorded in 2014.

A civil society human rights organisation has urged the Thai authorities to carry out an ‘independent’ investigation into the mysterious death in custody of a drug trafficking suspect. On Tuesday, 17 November 2015, the Cross Cultural Organisation (CrCF), a civil society human rights organisation, issued a public statement about the sudden death of Anan Koedkaew, 34, a drug trafficking suspect who died mysteriously three days after interrogation. Anan was arrested by investigators of Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Police on 9 November 2015.

A mother is suing the Thai Ministry of Defence and the Royal Thai Army over the death of her son, who was allegedly tortured by army officers shortly before his death.     According the Cross Cultural Foundation (CrCf), a CSO promoting human rights and cultural diversity, on Wednesday morning, 26 August 2015, the Civil Court of Bangkok, Ratchadaphisek Road, heard testimony from plaintiff witnesses in the case of the alleged torture of Somchai Si-ueangdoi.

Experts say torture will cause problems for society if people are not aware that it exists and what it will lead to. It is therefore the duty of the media to make society aware of torture.    On Wednesday 24 June, the Cross Cultural Foundation (CrCF), Amnesty International Thailand and the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology of Silpakorn University organized a public forum on Media and Torture Prevention at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC), Siam Square, Bangkok.

Thai and foreign human rights organizations issued statements, urging the junta to drop all charges against Dao Din, the anti-coup student activists from northeastern province of Khon Kaen. On Monday, the Human Rights Lawyers Association (HRLA) and the Union of Civil Liberty (UCL) issued statements on the judicial harassment against  on 19 June which 3 students of the Dao Din, an anti-coup student activist group based in Khon Kaen, were arrested and detained for drawing paintings.

The military court refused to detain the four anti-junta activists charged with violating junta’s public gathering ban after the police filed charges against them. The Bangkok’s Military Court at 6.30pm on Monday denied the custody request submitted by the military prosecutor against the four anti-junta activists, reasoning that the four came to report to the police and there is no flight risk.

A civil society organisation has urged police to step up measures to investigate the disappearance of a Karen human rights defender, pointing out that the case is being neglected. The Cross Cultural Foundation (CrCF), a civil society organisation which promotes and monitors human rights in Thailand, on Wednesday submitted a letter to Police Region 7 in order to urge the police to step up efforts in investigating the disappearance of Pollachi Rakchongcharoen, aka Billy, a Karen human rights activist who disappeared on 17 April 2014.

Lawyers and human rights activists condemn the military for its recent interruption and harassment a lawyer and her clients, saying the junta must respect the right to justice of the citizen.    On 11 November, military and police officers interrupted a private meeting between\ Sor Rattanamanee Polkaw, the lawyer from the Community Resources Centre (CRC) and her clients in northeastern Udon Thani Province, while they were discussing a case related to the environmental impact of a Xayaburi and Don Sahong dam.
