U Aung Thien, 43, a hired boatman from Dawei, died in Bangkok’s Wat Phai Tan community on 28 June. The cause of death is still under examination, amid concern in this multinational community over the lack of medical assistance, Covid-19 testing and state relief which they have not been able to access.

Dawei Development Association (DDA) calls on the Myanmar and Thai governments to refrain from reviving the Dawei Special Economic Zone (DSEZ) development project unless the problems associated with the project thus far are remedied and international best practices are in place going forward. The Prime Minister of Thailand, retired general, Prayuth Chan-ocha, is visiting Myanmar this week, as his first overseas visit since taking power earlier this year.

News about the visit to Myanmar of Gen. prayuth Chan-O-Cha, Thai Prime Minister and Head of the junta, on 9–10 October indicates that there will be talks between the Thai and Myanmar governments to revive the stalled Dawei Deep Seaport and Industrial Estate projects. Recent daily press reports refer to the economic advantages that could benefit Thailand, and predict the resumption of the project in November.

The media has recently reported that the sky is now clear over Dawei for the Italian-Thai Development Company (ITD), the developer of the Dawei deep seaport and industrial estate project. For the thousands of people for whom Dawei has been their home for generations, there are only dark clouds on the horizon.

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra left Dawei this early morning to Hong Kong by his private jet, an airport authority told Dawei Watch.
