The recently-dismissed Election Commissioner has said that the upcoming general election might be invalidated due to legal ambiguity and conflicts of authority between the junta and the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT).
On 25 March 2018, Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, a former member of the ECT, posted on Facebook a prediction that two problematic issues could lead to the nullification of the long-awaited election.

Thailand has taken another step closer to general elections after the promulgation of the new junta-written election commission law. New election commissioners will be selected by the 250 junta-appointed senators.
On 13 September 2017, the Organic Act on the Election Commission was published in the Royal Gazette after being passed by the National Legislative Assembly on 8 September.

The next general election might be again postponed after a Deputy Prime Minister said that he is uncertain if the organic laws can be finalised within 2018.
On 5 September 2017, Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan told the media at Government House that the next general election remains unscheduled as the drafting of organic laws is not yet finished.

After repeated postponements, the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) has announced that the next election will be held on 19 August 2018.
On 17 July 2017, Supachai Somcharoen, chair of the ECT, announced the time frame for Thailand’s next general election. The law on the election of MPs will be promulgated by 31 March 2018 while the ECT’s regulations on elections, including electoral districts, will be released in early April.

90 members of the junta-appointed National Legislative Assembly (NLA) face dismissal for breaching the constitution, according to the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT).
On 4 July 2017, the ECT initiated an investigation into 90 members of the NLA over alleged conflict of interest in their stock holdings. If found guilty, they will be dismissed for breaching the 2017 Constitution.
