Another gender-related bill to be deliberated soon is the Gender Equality bill, which criminalizes discrimination among the sexes and genders. If passed, it will be the first Thai law to contain language mentioning homosexuals. However, gender activists have cried foul, saying that the bill still perpetuates discrimination.

It’s always the big issue for people coming out of the closet. If it’s your parents, what do you do?
Noppon Poti, 19, who identifies himself as a gay individual, wrote a short letter and declared his sexuality to his mother. “Without a letter, I’m sure I wasn’t able to come out to my mother,” he said. “Letters can say many things.”
When Areerat Poti, his mother, read the short letter, she was shocked, even though she knew long ago he was gay. But at the same time, she was happy to hear it from him.

Women seem to have become a casualty of the ongoing political strife that has been plaguing the Kingdom since the 2006 military coup, if not earlier. This became very clear when a number of female Pheu Thai MPs decided to hand sarongs over to opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva in protest against his alleged reference to Thailand's first female prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra as a "stupid bitch".

On the evening of Thursday, September 5, 2013, a group of Thammasat University students posted 4 posters on various notice boards around the Thammasat-Rangsit campus. The posters show students in uniform posing in heterosexual and homosexual acts.

I recently had the opportunity to view a training film on gender relations in Thailand. Produced by a government agency, it adopted the format of a domestic drama, with acting and dialogue as dire as any Thai soap.

International women's day is the opportunity to celebrate women's economic, political and social achievements. It is the day to acknowledge the enormous potential of women in service of the prosperity of their communities and the core societal role they have to play for peace and political and economic development in their countries.
