On 26 January 2016, the Prime Minister, General Prayuth Chan-ocha, wrote a letter to the Chairperson of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) regarding the draft Act on Trafficking in Persons Procedure Code. He wrote about the rationale and provided a summary of the main issues, and urged the NLA to give priority to the Bill.

A civil society group providing assistance to migrants in Thailand has stated that nearly 400,000 migrants are currently at risk of deportation while human trafficking problems are still endemic.    On Thursday, 18 December 2015, International Migrants Day, the Migrant Working Group (MWG), a civil society organisation based in Thailand, held a press conference to launch its 2015 report ‘Migrant Crisis Protection’ at Xavier Hall in central Bangkok.

The former chief investigator into the Rohingya trafficking case plans to move abroad with his family after resigning from the police force out of fear for his family’s safety.     According to Thairath News, Maj Gen Paween Pongsiri, the head of the team investigating the human trafficking of Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants, has reportedly decided to move abroad with his family out of fear of the repercussions from the still powerful trafficking syndicates.

(BANGKOK)—Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia should immediately coordinate search and rescue operations for Rohingya asylum seekers and possible survivors of trafficking from Myanmar and Bangladesh who are stranded at sea, Fortify Rights said today. The governments of these three countries should open their borders to asylum seekers and provide survivors with access to asylum procedures, protection from detention and forced returns, and freedom of movement.

Khaosod English: Thai officials say they have uncovered yet another abandoned camp used by human smugglers to detain Rohingya refugees near the Malaysian border, the largest of five sites found in a sweep that started at the beginning of the month.   According to police, the jungle camp is located three kilometers away from the first site found by security officers in Songkhla province on 1 May.
