Update: the three were released on Friday evening with no charge. The police have detained three student activists from the Dao Din group of Khon Kaen University, interrupting their plan to show moral support to seven other group members wanted by the police. Kwanhathai Patumtawonsakul, Jiratchaya Hannarong and Krit Sangsurin were arrested at 1 pm when they were on their way to Khon Kaen’s Democracy Monument.

Students of the largest university in Thailand’s Northeast put up banners against the junta’s university privatisation plan. About 10 students of Khon Kaen University of the northeastern at around 4pm on Thursday held banners with messages reading “Opposing university privatisation = Opposing the coup d’état” and “President + National Legislative Assembly (NLA) + coup d’état = university privatisation” in front of the Food and Service Centre on the university campus.

A student in Thailand’s Northeast has displayed a banner and distributed leaflets against university privatisation. A student of Khon Kaen University, the largest university of the northeastern region of Thailand, at around 4 pm on 8 April hung a banner with a message reading “Khon Kaen University Company President-(Dictator) Ltd” from the top floor of the Food and Service Centre on the university campus. The student also distributed leaflets identifying four main reasons why the university should not be privatised.

The junta cabinet has approved bills to privatise two prominent state universities, saying that there is no need to ask students since the bills were proposed by the universities and many other universities have already undergone the same process.

A group of five students from Khon Kaen University in the northeastern province of Khon Kaen on Saturday held a symbolic activity at the university to mourn the court’s decision to convict a student theatre activist whose education and future were jeopardized after he was found guilty last week for starring in a play judged to constitute lèse majesté. This week, Patiwat S. was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for lèse majesté because of his role in the play, “The Wolf Bride.” Patiwat is the most recent student to have been imprisoned under the law, and has been an advocate for Isaan peoples’ rights and democracy for years. On Monday, the criminal court sentenced Khon Kaen University student Patiwat S. and activist Pornthip M. to five years in jail for their involvement in a satirical play that was deemed “damaging to the monarchy.” The court reduced the sentence by half for their admission of guilt.

Part III of the Modern Thai Student Movement paper focuses on two other student organizations of Isan, Khon Kaen and Mahasarakham, who describe themselves as apolitical. While one focus on local social development and problems in education, the other set their goals on amending the “SOTUS” system, perceived as one of the social ill.

Khon Kaen– Despite concerns from the military, about 400 people from thirteen provinces participated in the 7th Annual Isaan Human Rights Festival held yesterday at Kwanmor Hotel in Khon Kaen. New to the festival this year was the participation of diplomats from the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, the European Union, Sweden, and the United States.

High ranking military officer followed and “requested” to see a female member of Khon Kaen student activist group and continue to monitor the activities and whereabouts of the group members closely after the arrest of the five student activists flashing three-fingered in mid november. The student activist told Prachatai that the continuous intimidation from the authority stir up fear and greatly affected their studies during examination period.
