Migrant workers from Myanmar have filed a lawsuit against Betagro, a major food conglomerate, accusing the company of serious violations of labour rights. Last Friday, 2 September 2016, 14 migrant workers from Myanmar employed in one of Betagro’s subsidiary chicken farms in Lopburi Province filed a lawsuit against the company to the 1st Region Labour Court in Saraburi Province, the BBC Thai reported.

Thai employers are seriously abusing migrant workers from Myanmar on chicken farms, according to the Migrant Worker Rights Network (MWRN). At around 11 am on Thursday, 7 July 2016, staff of the MWRN and representatives of 14 migrant workers from Myanmar who had been employed on a chicken farm in Lopburi Province belonging to Betagro Company, a large agricultural and food products conglomerate in Thailand, submitted a letter to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

More than 100 migrant workers employed on construction sites in northern Thailand have been left unpaid by a real estate company. According Prachatham News, at 9 am on Wednesday, 27 January 2016, 121 migrant workers demonstrated at the Labour Protection and Welfare Office of the northern province of Chiang Mai.

The Bangkok South Criminal Court today confiscated the passport of British migrant rights defender Andy Hall and imposed on him a travel ban, following a temporary bail request submission. The bail request was made in advance of Hall’s official indictment next week on 18th January for an internationally monitored criminal defamation and computer crimes case brought against him by Thai pineapple exporter Natural Fruit Company Ltd.

A civil society group providing assistance to migrants in Thailand has stated that nearly 400,000 migrants are currently at risk of deportation while human trafficking problems are still endemic.    On Thursday, 18 December 2015, International Migrants Day, the Migrant Working Group (MWG), a civil society organisation based in Thailand, held a press conference to launch its 2015 report ‘Migrant Crisis Protection’ at Xavier Hall in central Bangkok.

The Thai criminal court has accepted another defamation case against Andy hall, a well-known advocate for migrant worker rights, who is accused of defaming a canned fruit company. On Monday morning, 24 July 2015, Bangkok’s Southern Criminal Court accepted a criminal defamation case against Andy Hall, a well-known human rights defender who advocates migrant worker rights, who is also accused of offenses under Article 14 of the 2007 Computer Crime Act.

Thai authorities should drop charges against a prominent migrant worker rights activist, Human Rights Watch said today. The charges violate the free expression rights of the activist, Andy Hall, and undermine his research into labor rights abuses by companies in Thailand.
