On 16 Sept. 2009, the State Enterprise Workers Relations Confederation (SERC), the Human Rights and Development Foundation (HRDF) and the Thai Labour Solidarity Committee (TLSC) will petition the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants calling for an urgent inquiry into the commencement of a nationality verification process for Burmese migrants in Thailand. Subsequently, a set of recommendations will be submitted to the Royal Thai Government.

Da Torpedo’s lawyer has submitted complaints to the Corrections Department, asking for an explanation of what he alleged as discrimination against his client, including putting her in solitary confinement as a punishment and labeling her as a lèse majesté convict. He also suspected warders of eavesdropping on his talks with his client, and prying into confidential documents.

In just two days, Thai media magnate Sondhi Limthongkul received a double whammy: He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment on 10 September for libel and he lost an appeal in another libel case, earning him another six-month jail term, media reports said.

The Royal Thai Air Force has purchased 4 new royal airplanes with a budget of 3.6 billion baht from the government. Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force said the planes and pilots had been selected to guarantee maximum safety.

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) is seeking more cooperation from relevant agencies and business groups to prevent inappropriate content on the internet.  The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) says the National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) is authorized to withdraw or suspend the licenses of the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) who do not cooperate in blocking inappropriate web pages.

In a migrant rights victory in Thailand, the parents of a 17 year old unregistered male Burmese work accident victim, Sai Htun, today settled their compensation claim against employers of their son at Region 5 Labour Court in Chiangmai, Northern Thailand. Two years after Sai Htun was killed on a local authority flood defence project, the 250, 000 baht (US$7, 143) settlement provides hope for over 2 million Burmese migrants currently working in dangerous workplaces in Thailand.
