<p>The &quot;Forest Reclamation Policy,&rdquo; led to regulations to stop encroachment on forest resources in 2014. Enforcement resulted in more than 46,000 villagers around the country being arrested and sued. &nbsp;Most were villagers who lived on, or had land plots that overlapped with, forest preserve areas in various ways.</p>

<p>The Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development (APWLD) and Protection International (PI) strongly object to the recent decision of Chaiyaphum province Appeals Court to find Nittaya Muangklang guilty of land encroachment and unsanctioned clearing of national park land. The court&rsquo;s decision upholds the provisions of a discriminatory forest reclamation policy, and disregards Thailand&rsquo;s obligation to protect peoples&rsquo; access to land and to protect women human rights defenders (WHRDs).</p>
