The Constitutional Court has been granted legal immunity from criticism, and the power to settle conflicts between state agencies. Although the new law allows ordinary people to petition the court directly, the process is still problematic, said a human rights advocacy group.   On 2 February 2018, the Organic Act on Constitutional Court was published in the Royal Gazette.

In the aftermath of mourning for the late King, a provincial governor has faced a furious protest for his failure in organising a local cremation ceremony while the junta’s organic laws have caused public concern.    After the royal cremation on 26 October, King Maha Vajiralongkorn allowed the cremation site to be open to the public throughout November.

The junta-appointed lawmakers have accepted in principle the Organic Act on the Constitutional Court which will protect the court from contempt and online criticism. Breaching the law can lead to up to one month in prison, a 50,000 baht fine, or both.

Thailand has taken another step closer to general elections after the promulgation of the new junta-written election commission law. New election commissioners will be selected by the 250 junta-appointed senators.    On 13 September 2017, the Organic Act on the Election Commission was published in the Royal Gazette after being passed by the National Legislative Assembly on 8 September.

New regulations on political parties have sparked debate over whether these will make parties more responsive to voters, or whether they will kill off many of Thailand’s current parties.    On 7 December 2016, the Constitution Drafting Committee published the first draft of the Organic Act on Elections, a reform of regulations on political parties that comes under the new junta-backed constitution.

To prevent politicians from committing severe corruption, the death penalty will be enshrined in an organic law of the junta-backed draft charter.   On 2 November 2016, Meechai Ruchuphan, the Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC), announced the CDC has been drafting the organic law for political parties — one of the most crucial laws of the junta-sponsored draft charter, reported Voice TV.
