A respected academic has been summoned by the police to hear charges filed against him in February by the national police chief for allegedly defaming the police. On 6 July 2017, Sungsidh Piriyarangsan, Dean of the College of Social Innovation of Rangsit University, was summoned to Lumpini Police Station in Bangkok to hear charges arising from a public forum in January about police reform.

Defending the soldier who shot dead a youth Lahu activist on suspicion of selling drugs, the national police chief said the activist could have shot soldiers. On 28 March 2017, at the National Police Headquarters in Bangkok, Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda, chief of the Royal Thai Police (RTP), announced that the police are now investigating the CCTV footage at the checkpoint where the Lahu activist Chaiyapoom Pasae was killed on 17 March.

The Thai authorities have arrested nine red shirts after seizing military weapons from nine different locations in central and northeastern Thailand, claiming the weapons were intended to be used to assassinate the junta leader. On 18 March 2017, a combined force of police and military searched a house in Pathum Thani Province belonging to Thirachai Utarawichian, an anti-establishment red shirt linked to Wuthipong Kachathamkun, aka Kotee, a fugitive prominent hard-core red-shirt leader.

The Thai police chief has filed criminal defamation charges against speakers at a discussion critical of the police force. On 14 February 2017, Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda, Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police (RTP), authorized Pol Col Worawit Yanchinda, Acting Superintendent of the Directorate of Metropolitan Police Bureau, to file a legal complaint against Sungsidh Piriyarangsan, Dean of the College of Social Innovation of Rangsit University, and Pol Col Virut Sirisawatdibut, former Deputy Commander of Chainat provincial police.

Thailand's police commander says he is willing to cover the flight costs for lèse majesté suspects to leave Thailand, adding he is happy to go into debt for the country.   On 26 October 2016, Gen Pol Chakthip Chaijinda, Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police, said that the police are doing their best to prosecute people accused of lèse majesté both inside and outside the country.

Thai police commander has demanded that Thai people stop harassing lèse majesté offenders, adding that 12 people have been prosecuted since King Bhumibol’s death.         On 19 October 2016, Chakthip Chaijinda, Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police, asked the public to report lèse majesté cases to the police, rather than harassing suspected offenders.

Thai police have refused to press lèse majesté charges against the mother of an embattled anti-junta activist.   Pol Lt Col Sanpetch Noothong, police investigator of the 3rd Division of the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD), submitted a petition to the relevant authorities to cancel the request to detain Patnaree Charnkij, the mother of well-known anti-junta activist Sirawit Serithiwat, Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR) reported.
