26 Human rights organizations issued a statement on Monday (5 September) calling for independence and professionalism in the judicial process, after former Kaeng Krachan National Park Chaiwat Limlikhitaksorn and three other park officials were indicted for the abduction and murder of community rights activist and Bang Kloi indigenous community leader Porlajee "Billy" Rakchongcharoen.

Public prosecutors have filed formal charges against a group of officials who stand accused of murdering and concealing the body of a land rights activist back in 2014. Despite the move, civil rights advocates remain skeptical that justice will be served in the case.

Since the announcement that bones bones found in Kaeng Krachan Dam have been confirmed to be those of Karen environmental activist and community rights defender Porlajee “Billy” Rakchongcharoen, who went missing in 2014. Several human rights organizations have since called for the Thai authorities to conduct an investigation into his abduction and murder.

The announcement that the remains of Porlajee “Billy” Rakchongcharoen, a Karen rights activist, have been located, bringing a sad end to years of uncertainty for his family. This development should lead to a renewed focus on identifying the perpetrator(s) of his apparent enforced disappearance and bringing them to justice, said the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and Amnesty International today (4 September).

At 13.00 today, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) held a press conference to reveal that DNA tests have confirmed that bones found in Kaeng Krachan Dam are those of the missing Karen environmental activist and community rights defender Porlajee “Billy” Rakchongcharoen, who disappeared in 2014.

The family of Karen human rights defender Porlajee “Billy” Rakchongcharoen, along with a lawyer from the Human Rights Lawyers Association (HRLA) and the Cross Cultural Foundation (CrCF), filed a request with the Phetchaburi Provincial Court to have Porlajee declared legally dead on 27 August, says CrCF.  Porlajee "Billy" Rackchongcharoen and his family (file)
