  On 7 January 2019, after the Thai authorities had a change of heart in regards to the 18-year-old Saudi asylum-seeker Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, Maj Gen Surachate Hakparn, the Thai Immigration Police chief, told reporters: “Thailand is the Land of Smiles. We will not send anyone to die.”

Senator Marise Payne, the Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs, said at a press conference this afternoon that Australia is concerned about the detention and possible extradition of Hakeem al-Araibi by the Thai authorities and that Australia is working with the relevant agencies on the cases of both Mr al-Araibi and Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun.

Ms. Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun, a Saudi national, has fled from her family due to her being forced into marriage and being subject to egregious physical and mental abuse. En route to her asylum in Australia, she has made a stop at the Suvarnabhumi Airport. While awaiting a connecting flight, someone who claimed to have come from the embassy of Saudi Arabia in Thailand with another individual who claimed to have come from the Kuwait Airlines, have approached her and held her in custody in a room at the Miracle Transit Hotel inside the Suvarnabhumi Airport.

After overwhelming international support for 18-year-old Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, the Thai authorities have apparently changed direction. Maj Gen Surachate Hakcharn said around 4 pm today that Thailand will no longer try to deport her against her will, saying that “we won’t send someone to their death.” He also announced that representatives from the UNHCR would be able to meet with her at 5 pm.

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, an 18-year-old Saudi woman, has been detained at Suvarnabhumi Airport after fleeing from her family. Attempting to seek asylum in Australia, she fears being killed by her own family for renouncing Islam.

(Bangkok) – Thailand authorities should immediately halt the planned deportation of a Saudi woman who says she is fleeing domestic abuse and fears for her safety if forcibly returned to Saudi Arabia, Human Rights Watch said today. The authorities should also allow her unrestricted access to make a refugee claim with the Bangkok office of the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) and should respect UNHCR’s decision under the agency’s protection mandate.
