On the banks of the Mun River in northeastern Thailand, communities are still struggling with the impact of a dam that was built almost 30 years ago. After calls for the decommission of the dam were left unheeded, local activists are shifting the focus on the recovery of their livelihoods.

Photos collection of the anti-Rasi Salai dam movement in 1990s, these images were taken over the years by four local amateur Thai photographers and community members, Sanun Chusakul, Pairor Sujinprum, Juthathip Damrongtrairat and Pranee Makhanun. They document an important part of this community struggle, showing protests and activities of resistance, as well as ways of life that now no longer exist.

Rasi Salai, Sisaket - A twenty-foot high tower of rice sacks presides over The Wetlands Center in Rasi Salai, serving as a reverent centerpiece assembled by local villagers in honor of their land and labor. For a community bound together by the natural world and, increasingly, the myriad of threats to it, the rice mound is a symbol to be admired.
