<p>The military has threatened to detain an outspoken academic in a military barracks if he does not stop posting about corruption and dictatorship.</p> <p>On 13 June 2017, Surapot Thaweesak, a well-known scholar of religion,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/suraphotthaweesak/posts/1404838352942833">posted on his Facebook account&nbsp;</a>that military officers in Bangkok had warned him over political posts.</p>
<p>Thai academics have claimed that a campaign to make Buddhism the state religion of Thailand goes against human rights principles.</p> <p>On Wednesday and Thursday, 4-5 November 2015,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlItmSYhLVM&amp;feature=youtu.be">Thaivoice Media</a>&nbsp;posted on YouTube a video interview of Surapot Thaweesak, a well known religious scholar.</p>
<p>About two years ago, Prachatai columnist and university lecturer Surapot Thaweesak met a monk from the Dhammakaya Temple who visited his university to propose a joint Buddhist training programme for students.&nbsp; He was told that his university would have to recruit students to attend the programme and they would be required to pay for Dhamma books and other expenses.&nbsp; However, the temple provided a promotion discount for the expenses if his university decided to join the programme immediately.</p>
