After the junta leader scrapped regulations on power plant construction at the stroke of a pen, hundreds of students in Thailand’s Deep South rallied against a proposed coal-fired power plant in the region. Hundreds of students from the Federation of Patanian Students and Youth (PerMAS) and other student organisations on Friday afternoon, 22 January 2016, rallied at Prince of Songkla University in the Deep South Province of Pattani against the plan to construct a coal-fired power plant in Thepha District of Songkhla Province.

18 civil society organisations in the Deep South region of Thailand have urged Thai state authorities to stop the intimidation and suspension of rights of civil society workers. At the Muslim Attorney Centre (MAC) in the southern province of Pattani on Tuesday morning, 14 July 2015, 18 civil society organisations, members of the ‘Southern Border Provinces CSO Network for Peace’, came together to read a joint statement to demand that the Thai authorities stop the abuse of rights and intimidation.

Seven student activists in Thailand’s Northeast, Isan Region, refused to appear at a police station on Monday while activist groups from many regions of the nation marched to show their moral support. On 8 June, seven student activists of Dao Din, a student activist group based in Khon Kaen University who were summoned by the police, refused to report to the police in the northeastern province of Khon Kaen. They hoped that their ‘civil resistance movement’ could inspire other activists and people to show solidarity against the military regime.

A student organisation in the restive deep south of Thailand has called on the Thai junta to respect the civil and political rights of people in the region and pointed out that human rights have deteriorated under the junta’s rule.

The Thai military detained five students without arrest warrants while carrying out a search and collected DNA samples from another group of students in the restive deep south. According to Wartani, military and security officers from the Southern Border Provinces Police Operation Centre (SBPPOC) stormed into Darussalam Foundation School in Bang Kaew District of southern Phatthalung Province at around 10.20 am on Tuesday and detained five students without arrest warrants.
