A military court has sentenced an anti-coup politician who failed to report to the military to a year in prison. The penalty was halved and the jail term was suspended because the defendant pleaded guilty.

The Military Court on Thursday morning convicted Sanguan Pongmanee, a former MP for the northern province of Lamphun from the now-defunct Pheu Thai Party, to a year in prison and 20,000 baht fine for refusing to report to the coup-makers.

The penalty, however, was reduced by half because the defendant pleaded guilty and the jail term is suspended for a year.

According to Matichon, Sanguan reported to the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) on 25 June after he was informed that a military court had issued an arrest warrant against him while he was overseas. He told the authorities that he did not report because he had done nothing wrong and was abroad at that time.

During the deposition hearing on 8 September, the military court announced that the charge against Sanguan was that he failed to obey Order No. 57/2014 of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to report before a given deadline. Therefore, according to NCPO Order No. 41/2014, he broke the law and the order of the coup-maker.

Sanguan served as a Member of Parliament for Lamphun for four terms. He was one of the politicians who in 2011 took part in a campaign to amend the 2007 Constitution.
