No campaign on draft charter allowed: Deputy junta head

The deputy head of the ruling junta has warned the public not to discuss the content of the latest draft constitution, saying that it might lead to misunderstanding and conflict.

On Tuesday, 19 April 2016, Matichon Online reported that Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, the deputy NCPO head and Minister of Defence, told the media that people should not stage any campaign relating to the referendum on the draft constitution, which will be held on 7 August,.

According to Matichon Online, Prawit said that the public opinion on the draft should not be determined by politicians as these can be misleading. Therefore, only members of the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) can discuss the draft.

“If you like the draft, just vote for it. If you don’t like it, then just vote ‘no’. Just let the drafters publicly discuss the draft constitution since other people don’t understand the draft as well as the drafters,” Matichon quoted Gen Prawit as saying.

Gen Prawit added that free discussion on the draft, where one side supports the draft and another opposes it, can lead to conflict and further chaos, reported Matichon Online.
