Poll reveals most voters undecided on draft charter referendum

A recent political survey shows an increase in the number of voters who are still undecided whether they should vote in the August referendum or not.

On Sunday, 3 July 2016, NIDA Poll published the result of the sixth survey on the upcoming draft constitution referendum, revealing that 62.80 per cent of the respondents are still undecided whether they should vote or not, which is almost double the first survey’s result, while 3.07 per cent of respondents will vote but have not yet made their final decision.

27.33 per cent of the respondents will vote in favour the draft charter and 6.80 per cent said they will turn it down.

In this referendum, in addition to voting on the draft constitution, voters have to vote an additional question which proposes to give the 250 junta-appointed senators the power to join with the House of Representatives in the vote to select a Prime Minister.

The survey shows that respondents’ opinions on the question are similar to those on the draft charter. One significant difference is that more than 20 per cent of the respondents will reject the proposal while less than seven per cent will reject the draft.

The data for the sixth survey was collected between 28 and 29 June 2016 from 1,500 Thai people sampled for gender, education, age and income. The poll was conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA).
