Authorities have confiscated over 2,000 letters from anonymous senders containing information against the junta’s draft charter in the northern province of Chiang Mai while another 3,000 were found in Lampang a day earlier.   

On Wednesday, 13 July 2016, Maj Gen Koson Prathumchat, the commander of 33rd Army Circle, along with police officers confiscated 2,000 letters that campaigned against the junta’s draft charter from a post office in Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand. The authorities suspected that the letters aim to persuade people to vote ‘No’ in the August draft charter referendum by distorting the draft’s content, Matichon Online reported.

Buntham Prasongwarakit, the post office’s head, said that the letters were intent to send to people in various districts in Chiang Mai including San Sai, San Kamphaeng, San Pa Koi, Mae Rim, and Mae Jo. In San Kamphaeng district, where the letters were found the most, authorities confiscated almost a thousand letters.

Maj Gen Koson said that he will forward the letters to the Election Commission of Thailand local office for further investigation, adding that the authorities will set up measure to fight against the letters by installing banners informing public not to believe the distorting information, reported Matichon Online.

This is after the similar case of finding 3,000 letters in the northern province of Lampang on Tuesday. Local authorities are in pursuit of the senders. The letters have only the addresses of the receivers in the neighbouring province of Lampang, but no names of either the receivers or the senders. They contain messages campaigning to ‘vote no’ against the junta-sponsored draft constitution.
