Involvement of high-ranking member of royal family in Thai politics is impertinent and unconstitutional, says Royal Command.

At 22:10 today (8 February), the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand announced a Royal Command.

Symbol of Royal Command

The Royal Command begins by mentioning the role of the late King Bhumibol during his 70-year reign, working hard to attain happiness and prosperity for the people.

The Command then mentions former Princess Ubolratana, the eldest daughter of King Bhumibol. The Command says that, even though she has renounced her titles, she is still a member of the royal family, beloved by her parents and respected by all members of the royal family as well as the Thai people. She has performed her royal duties in the service of the people. Involvement of high-ranking members of the royal family in the political system in any way contravenes royal tradition, custom, and national culture. To do so is therefore impertinent.

According to the Royal Command, every constitution has a particular section on the monarchy. In a constitutional monarchy, the monarch, as well as the queen, the heir apparent, and members of the royal family, follows the principle of political neutrality. They cannot be violated, accused, or prosecuted. Assuming any political positions would contradict the will of the constitution and the traditions of the constitutional monarchy.

There is still no reaction from Thai Raksa Chart Party, which nominated Princess Ubolratana as their Prime Ministerial candidate earlier today.
