On Sunday (25 August), the family of Abdullah Isomuso, who was admitted to hospital after being found unconscious in his cell at Ingkhayutthaborihan Military Camp in Pattani, announced that he had died after 35 days in intensive care.

Doctors who examined the body of a soldier who allegedly died from ill-treatment during military training testified that he was left drowning for at least five minutes. The Civil Court on Ratchadaphisek Road, Bangkok, held witness hearings from 13-15 June 2017 on the death of Sub Lt Sanan Thongdinok, who drowned to death on 6 June 2015 while swimming as part of the King’s Guard Regiment training course.

The Royal Thai Army has initiated an investigation after a video emerged on social media of a soldier being violently beaten by his supervisors.   On 18 November 2016, a video clip of a soldier being repeatedly beaten by his supervisors was widely shared on Thai social media. In the video, the soldier was hit hard with rods and kicked in the head. A supervisor is heard warning him not to express pain and threatening to restart the punishment if he does so. Surrounding soldiers also participated in the punishment.

Police officers have beaten a gambler to death in the middle of a residential area. The officers disappeared after the killing, according to a witness.   On 3 November 2016, police officers from Sutthisan Police Station raided an illegal gambling house in Bangkok and beat Don Daengchantip, 34, to death, reported Manager Online.   The gambling house is located in a high density area of Rungrueang.

The mother and wife of a soldier who allegedly died from ill-treatment during military training have filed a civil lawsuit against the Royal Thai Army. At the Civil Court on Ratchadaphisek Road, Bangkok, on Monday, 6 June 2016, Wan Thongdinok, the mother of Sub Lt Sanan Thongdinok, together with Thanyarat Wannasathit, Sanan’s wife, filed a charge against the Royal Thai Army under the 1996 Act on Liability of Abuse of Officials over the death of Sub Lt Sanan.

The court has ordered a Deep South’s security agency to compensate two Muslim Malay, who were beaten and arbitrarily detained by the security force seven years ago. This is a very rare occasion where victims of human rights violation in the restive southernmost provinces get compensated.
