(Bangkok) – Thailand authorities should immediately halt the planned deportation of a Saudi woman who says she is fleeing domestic abuse and fears for her safety if forcibly returned to Saudi Arabia, Human Rights Watch said today. The authorities should also allow her unrestricted access to make a refugee claim with the Bangkok office of the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) and should respect UNHCR’s decision under the agency’s protection mandate.

2-3 years ago, the Thai media paid more interest to the issue of the disabled, judging from the content appearing on television and in online media.  I myself became immersed in this issue with the creation of the ThisAble.me website to pose questions about the lives of the disabled, and to explore the doubts of society about the ability and rights of this group and the misconceptions that they have to face.

The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security has drafted a Gender Equality Bill, to be sent for consideration by the blatantly gender-unequal Cabinet and then for enactment by the similarly gender-biased National Legislative Assembly. Its proponents are touting its progressive characteristics.  For the first time, it mentions a gender other than male and female. Whoopee.

Another gender-related bill to be deliberated soon is the Gender Equality bill, which criminalizes discrimination among the sexes and genders. If passed, it will be the first Thai law to contain language mentioning homosexuals. However, gender activists have cried foul, saying that the bill still perpetuates discrimination.

It’s always the big issue for people coming out of the closet. If it’s your parents, what do you do?   Noppon Poti, 19, who identifies himself as a gay individual, wrote a short letter and declared his sexuality to his mother. “Without a letter, I’m sure I wasn’t able to come out to my mother,” he said. “Letters can say many things.”   When Areerat Poti, his mother, read the short letter, she was shocked, even though she knew long ago he was gay. But at the same time, she was happy to hear it from him.
