Migrant workers from Myanmar have filed a lawsuit against Betagro, a major food conglomerate, accusing the company of serious violations of labour rights. Last Friday, 2 September 2016, 14 migrant workers from Myanmar employed in one of Betagro’s subsidiary chicken farms in Lopburi Province filed a lawsuit against the company to the 1st Region Labour Court in Saraburi Province, the BBC Thai reported.

After its international accreditation was degraded from A to B, Thailand’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) faces another round of criticism from an Asian civil society network on human rights over its inaction and partiality. The Asian NGO Network on National Human Rights Institutions (ANNI) on 29 August 2016 issued a statement criticising the NHRC, saying that the NHRC is inactive and partisan.

Contradicting the Minister of Justice, the Thai National Human Rights Commission has concluded that shackling political dissidents is a violation of human rights. What Tingsamitr, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), on Tuesday, 9 August 2016, concluded that the use of shackles by the Department of Corrections (DC) on detained political activists from the New Democracy Movement (NDM) violates human rights and dignity, the Manager Online reported.

Thai employers are seriously abusing migrant workers from Myanmar on chicken farms, according to the Migrant Worker Rights Network (MWRN). At around 11 am on Thursday, 7 July 2016, staff of the MWRN and representatives of 14 migrant workers from Myanmar who had been employed on a chicken farm in Lopburi Province belonging to Betagro Company, a large agricultural and food products conglomerate in Thailand, submitted a letter to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

After five years in prison, Somyot Prueksakasemsuk, a long-time labour activist turned lèse-majesté suspect, has urged the authorities to improve prison conditions, saying prisoners’ rights deteriorated greatly after the 2014 coup d’état. Suwanna Tanlek, a pro-democracy activist, on Thursday morning, 16 June 2016, submitted a petition to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The petition was written by Somyot Prueksakasemsuk, former editor of the now-defunct Voice of Taksin magazine, charged with offences under Article 112 of the Criminal Code, the lèse majesté law.

The Thai election commission has warned that people selling t-shirts with prints about the referendum on the junta-sponsored draft constitution might face up to 10 years imprisonment. On Wednesday, 4 May 2016, Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, Election Commissioner of Thailand (ETC), told media that certain political groups might be charged under the Draft Referendum Act for selling t-shirts with images or texts about the referendum on the draft constitution.
