Book Discussion “The Cell, Exile and the New Burma” by Kyaw Zwa Moe

July 11 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

From behind the walls of Burma’s prison to the 1988 uprising and to border towns and communities of displaced ethnic groups, this new book revisits many of the stops in this Southeast Asian country’s more recent history. What does Burma’s past tell us about its future in its bumpy road of political transition?

On 11 July 2018 Reporting ASEAN in collaboration with SEA Junction will reflect on the above issues with a discussion of the recently published book “The Cell, Exile and the New Burma” The journalist Johanna Son will interview the author Kyaw Zwa Moe on the book contents and related topic before facilitating the public discussion.

The book contains articles and essays, as well as personal recollections of Kyaw Zwa Moe, a former political prisoner who is a senior editor with the English edition of the ‘The Irrawaddy’ news publication. A student activist jailed from 1991 to 1999 for publishing and distributing a political journal, he lived in exile in Thailand and now lives in Yangon.

The book’s articles span 17 years, across which the author’s selected reportage focuses the struggle of Burma – and by a countless number of its people – to break free of political repression and conflict. They are a reminder of the cost behind Burma’s tenuous political transition, and of the value of documenting both personal history and historical memories that are valuable in shaping future societies.
